OCT 3D scan guide: everything you need to know

OCT 3D scans are the most advanced eye screening tool currently available. If you are interested in booking an OCT scan, or you simply want to know more, you’ll find everything you need to know here.

Book an OCT Scan

What is an OCT scan?

OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) is an advanced, non-invasive scan that provides our optometrists with a 3D image of the internal structures of the eye. It allows for each individual layer of the retina to be imaged to the point that their thickness can be measured.

What is the difference between traditional viewing of the retina during an eye test and an OCT scan?

Traditional viewing of the back of the eye allows viewing of the surface layers of the retina at the back of the eye. An OCT 3D scan provides us with images of the 10 layers of the retina thus providing far more information and detail than a traditional viewing method.

How does an OCT scan work?

This advanced technology utilises light waves to obtain images of the retina (similar to how an ultrasound scan uses sound waves). You will be asked as a patient to sit in front of the machine and fixate on a target and the machine will then carry out the scan in a few seconds. The scan is then analysed by a trained professional.

Is an OCT scan safe?

An OCT 3D scan is safe and painless. Taking the scan is a quick procedure and has no side effects for the patient.

Who should have an OCT scan?

We recommend booking an OCT scan to anyone aged 18 or over. This is because it is a great way of monitoring our patients’ eye health, trends and changes over time, enabling early detection of certain eye conditions.

We also recommend an OCT scan to patients with certain systemic conditions such as diabetes, family history of eye conditions such as glaucoma, and patients with other risk factors for developing ocular pathologies.

Why do an OCT scan?

OCT scans can help detect sight-threatening conditions earlier. Even if your eyes are healthy, having an OCT scan is beneficial for the future as we are able to make comparisons and monitor trends and changes in your eyes over time. This allows us to detect potential eye conditions early and refer you on for sight saving treatment sooner.

What conditions can an OCT scan diagnose?

Prevention is crucial for the majority of severe eye conditions, as they show no symptoms in their early stages and can cause irreversible sight loss and even blindness if untreated.

An OCT scan can help diagnose many severe eye conditions, some of them far earlier than traditional methods would allow. Conditions which can be picked up include, but are not limited to:

  • glaucoma
  • diabetic retinopathy
  • retinal detachment
  • age-related macular degeneration
  • macular hole
  • optic nerve inflammation
  • retinal vein occlusion

How much is an OCT scan?

You can take advantage of all the benefits of an enhanced sight test with an OCT 3D scan for a small additional fee (£20) to your standard eye test.

OCT scans are free of charge for our My Emporium Care Plan members as part of the exclusive benefits reserved to patients who sign up to the scheme.
