Radiation is found naturally in sunlight. Exposure to UV radiation can cause our skin to tan and can also cause many eye conditions, like those further listed below.

Up to 80% of the sun's UV rays can penetrate clouds, meaning that even when you don't feel the benefits of the sun's warmth you still reap the harmful effects of the UV. Not only this, but more than % of of the radiation our eyes receive is indirect, meaning that it comes from sources that reflect the light or cause glare. This could be a bright reflection from a shop window, or the glare from a wet road which can cause damage to your eyes.

Photokeratitis: This is like a sunburn of the eye, long hours at the beach or skiing without proper eye protection can cause this and it cane be very painful and cause temporary vision loss.

Cataracts: A cloud of the eye's natural lens, the part that focuses the light we see.

Macular Degeneration: A lead loss of vision for older people. Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye condition that effects the central part of your retina which is called the macula. It causes changes to your central vision and makes everyday tasks difficult.

Pterygium: A growth that begins on the white of the eye may involve in the cornea and eventually the growth may block your vision. It is more common in people who work outside in the sun and wind.

Skin Cancer: Skin cancer around the eyelids is also linked to prolonged UV exposure.

So what can we do to help?

Sunglasses: Ideally all children and adults should wear good quality sunglasses and a peaked hat when the sun is out. Basic UV protected sunglasses, or even better, polarised lenses.

Transition Lenses: These are UV protected lenses and their tint varies with light. These are fully UV protected and a flexible lens which adapt to light by tinting in the sun but also by being clear indoors.

Good Anti-reflecting Coating: Essilor Crizal UV, BBGR Neva Max UV. Not only do these two anti-reflection coated lenses help with their good anti-reflection properties, they are also designed to keep the harmful UV rays, again, from protecting our eyes.
